It's fantastic to be back amongst friends for our first in-person conference since 2019 - made particularly special for me as my first since becoming leader. And what a time to be back! Liberal Democrats are winning again. In May, we had a spectacular set of local elections - making gains right across the country, from Scotland to Somerset. Then of course, our historic result in Tiverton & Honiton. Where we overturned the biggest majority at a by-election. Ever. Elected the brilliant Richard Foord as our 14th MP. And proved we can beat the Tories in their former heartlands like no one else can. The British people have been taken for granted for far too long - and it's clear they're fed up. Families across the country are suffering because of the cost of living emergency. But still, they are ignored by an uncaring Conservative Government that offers no leadership whatsoever. It's with this in mind that we gather for our conference. In Tiverton & Honiton, our campaign showed that people want a fairer, better way of life. And conference is an opportunity to show voters across Britain that Liberal Democrats do care. That we're listening to them, acting on their concerns, and fighting for a fair deal. Hopefully we'll have some fun along the way, too. Have a great conference. Sir Ed Davey MP, Leader of the Liberal Democrats Welcome to Conference from Mark Pack It's thirty years since my first autumn federal conference, appropriately also in Brighton. That 1992 conference was the start of the most successful electoral run in our party's history - record-breaking Parliamentary by-election wins, sweeping local government gains and then a huge leap in the size of the Parliamentary Party as a tired, discredited, scandal-riven Conservative Party lost office. Repeating that is our challenge in the next few years - and we've already made a tremendous start with our election wins last year and this. Huge thanks are due to all our candidates, agents and helpers for their hard work in making that happen - and to their families and colleagues for tolerating their absences on the campaign trail. An important part of that success in the 1990s was our party conferences, providing such an important opportunity for us to learn new skills, to set our policy and strategy and to be energised by meeting colleagues from all around the country, and overseas too. This time around we have an advantage - the ability to bring in an even wider range of participants through online access to conference. It's a huge credit to our conference committee that our return to an in-person conference is being accompanied by a new option for online access. Enabling those who cannot afford the time or costs of an in-person conference to still access the event is an important part of making our aspirations on diversity and our commitment to internal democracy meaningful. Whether in person or online, I look forward to seeing you at conference, hearing your views and taking part in our debates. Please don't hesitate to grab me for any questions you have, or drop me an email on president@libdems.org.uk Best wishes, Mark Pack, President of the Liberal Democrats Conference information If you have any questions on-site, please ask a steward or go to the Information Desk in the main foyer on the ground floor of the Brighton Centre.
